Goal
The goal of this test was to assess the user-friendliness of my app on mobile.
My objectives were:
· See how users login
· Watch interaction with icons and other UI elements · Observe user flow and reaction to interface and features
I drafted a recruitment message and conducted video testing with three testers
Scope Included:
· Social media.
· Storing offline trails.
· Trail navigation and logging rides.
· Key safety features for mountain bikers.
Tasks:
1. Search for a mountain bike trail to ride
2. Find social media activity/feed
3. Record your ride
4. Download a map for offline use
5. Drop a pin and list an Emergency or download map 6. Call or Message other riders
7. Send an Emergency alert
8. Upload an activity
9. Update a trail condition
Tester 1 Notes
Jason Chen 30 yrs old Financial Analyst, Married, Jersey City , USA
Task 1 Notes
· Had difficulty understanding which icon was trail icon · Thought trail navigation went too deep. And that App should be intuitive and
fun. Universal. Simple.
Task 2 Notes
· Thought Profile Icon should include more than one person in order to show “friends” or social aspect
Task 3 Notes
· Record button was confusing in inactive state
Task 4 Notes
· Download, Condition, Reviews, Media need to pop up on same screen instead of going so many pages deep
Task 5 Notes
· Had difficulty dropping pin
· Had great suggestion to overlay pin drop screen onto current screen where pin
is dropped
Task 6 Notes
· No problem
Task 7 Notes
· No problem
Tester 2
Emily Haugen 25, Educator, Single , Chicago, IL
Task 1 Notes
· Found Trail Icon easily
· Thought that Trail Icon could read better though
· Thought that perhaps Trail page could be landing page instead of social ( focus
on function instead of another social media app
· “X drop down and Trails” were not a clear header
Task 2 Notes
· No Problems
Task 3 Notes
· No problems
Task 4 Notes
· Downloading Map was tricky because on map page it wasn’t an obvious button
Task 5 Notes
· No problems
Task 6 Notes
· No Problems
Task 7 Notes
· Tricky uploading activity since activities weren’t loading in real time
Tester 3
Julian Emele, 29, Insurance Agent, Single, Jersey City, NJ
Task 1 Notes
· Wanted more trails and variation of the experience
Task 2 Notes
No Problem
Task 3 Notes
· Recording button is already recording; confusing since there’s no option to start recording
Task 4 Notes
· Was a little tricky finding page for this
Task 5 Notes
· Slightly confusing
Task 6 Notes
· Chat icon seemed to communicate ability to text only · Perhaps create icon that communicates talk and text functions
Task 7 Notes
· Emergency situations should be differentiated better such as a color code (ie Amber Alert)
Results Synthesis and Error Rating Issue
Error Rating Suggestion
Icons Should be more descriptive
3
Some Icons (Profile and Chat) need to be more descriptive to the tasks one can perform. Other Icons (Trails and Record were just confusing). Get more specific with design and reference icon standards. Ability to download maps was difficult
2
The buttons on this page were not very pronounced, also the actual download button was actually visible until user was several screens into the app.
Pin drop was confusing
2
Overlay pin drop onto current screen instead of transitioning to new screen.
Trail Navigation gets too deep
3
Do as much as possible on one screen before creating another one. Complicates things for user and also isn’t fun and intuitive
Maybe Trails should be landing page
2
Perhaps consider making the Trails page the landing page and making the app more about function than social media
Conclusion:
The user testing helped me reshape the app and direction that I was going. I was forced to simplify my decisions based around paint points in the prototype and user needs indicated in user personas.
